Are you a school principal or administrator and interested in having TLC visit your school? You will find information about her school programs on this page.

School Visits

TLC is always happy to speak to middle and high school students. Here are some basic resources on scheduling an author visit. If you are interested in arranging a school visit, either contact TLC directly or through her publisher, Dutton Children's Books for more information. Futher down the page you will find lists of specific presentations and activities TLC can provide.

Talks

Interested in having TLC speak to your students, in either large groups or classroom situations? Any of her talks can be targeted to grades 7-12. Here are some of her prepared presentations. (If you have a topic in mind that is not listed, contact TLC with your request.)

How Not To Be A Writer
There are many misconceptions about what a writer is and what they are not. TLC will dispel the myths and confirm the truth of what it's like to be a writer and what kind of skills a writer really needs. Hint: Grammar ain't everything in this biz. [Time: 30-45 min.]
Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Publishing A Book
TLC will take students, step by step, through the process of writing, selling and publishing a book. She will share her insights on everything from getting that very first germ of an idea to the bookstore shelves. [Time: 45 min-1 hour.]

Activities

TLC can also lead smaller groups through various writing-related activities. Any of her activities can be targeted to grades 7-12. Here are some of her prepared activities.

Guided Writing
In this highly interactive activity, TLC will lead students through the process of creating a story. Begining with only a character name, students will work through the process of characterization, premise, and plot development. [Group size: 10-30. Time: 1-2 hours.]
Collaging A Character
TLC uses collaging early in the process of writing a book to create depth and a strong visual identity for each character. She will lead students through the process of collaging a character of their own creation. Can be combined with the Guided Writing activity to create a longer, more in depth workshop. [Group size: 10-30. Time: 1-2 hours.]
One-on-One Critiques
With advanced students, TLC will gladly do individual critiques in a small group setting, providing positive and constructive criticism for aspiring authors. [Group size: 5-10. Time: 1 hour.]
